Great diving beetle
The great diving beetle is a big water beetle and a super swimmer. Its back is dark brown, green or black, and its belly, legs and the edges of its body are yellow. It is a fierce hunter in ponds and lakes.

Before it dives, it tucks a bubble of air under its wing cases, like a little scuba tank.
Its baby, the larva, can grow up to 6 centimetres long, even longer than the grown-up beetle.
It flies at night and finds new ponds by the shine of moonlight on the water. Sometimes it lands on wet, shiny roads by mistake.
The male has little suction cups on his front legs to hold on tight.
The mother lays her eggs inside the leaves of water plants. They hatch after 17 to 19 days.
