American giant millipede

Narceus americanus
Eats: Leftovers and dead thingsCentipedes and millipedesForests and woodsNot an insect, but a bug cousin

The American giant millipede is a long, round millipede that can grow to about 10 centimetres long. It shuffles slowly through the forest on many tiny legs. When it is scared, it curls up into a tight spiral.

Fun fact: this one is not an insect. Insects have six legs, and this cousin has many, many more.

Eastern North America, from the Atlantic coast west to Texas, in damp woods

10 cm (3.9 in)

Harmless
It does not bite or sting. If you bother it, it can ooze a liquid that may stain or irritate your skin, so wash your hands after holding one.
What does it eat?
It eats rotting wood and fallen leaves, mostly at night. If it can, it also likes fresh fruit and even deer droppings.
